Tower and Meridian Hall
The Astronomical Tower climb begins in the central courtyard. You follow the guide upa spiral staircase of wooden steps, stopping at the Meridian Hall on the first landing. The hall's brass meridian line runs north-south across the floor; a small aperture in the southern wall admits a shaft of sunlight at solar noon. Jesuit astronomers used this setup from to synchronize Prague Mean Time. The walls hold sextants, quadrants, and a transit telescope, all original instruments. Your guide explains the daily routine: as the sun's image crossed the meridian, the observer recorded the time on a regulator clock. The hall retains its oak panelling and the aperture remains open, so on clear days you can watch the sunlight trace the line. After ten minutes you continue upward to the observation gallery, where the balcony offers views of the Vltava, Prague Castle, and the Old Town.
Library Hall
The tour descends from the tower and enters the Library Hall. The barrel-vaulted ceiling carries frescoes depicting the Temple of Wisdom and allegorical figures of the arts and sciences. Walnut bookcases line every wall, rising two storeys to the vault. The collection holds tens of thousands volumes, many in vellum bindings with gilt spines. Celestial and terrestrial globes stand on pedestals between the cases. The parquet floor is geometric marquetry in oak and walnut. Natural light enters through tall eastern windows. Flash photography is prohibited to protect the pigments and bindings. You spend approximately ten minutes in the hall while the guide highlights key works and explains the Jesuit scholarly tradition. The room is climate-controlled and kept cool to preserve the books.
