Astronomical Tower and Meridian Hall

The Astronomical Tower rises above the courtyard. Your family climbsa spiral staircase of wooden steps, stopping at the Meridian Hall on the first landing. A brass line set into the floor marks true north-south; a small aperture in the southern wall admits a shaft of sunlight at solar noon. Jesuit astronomers used this setup from to record daily observations. The walls display sextants, quadrants, and a transit telescope. Your guide explains how the observers synchronized Prague Mean Time by noting when the sun's image crossed the meridian line. The hall retains its original oak panelling and the aperture remains open, so on sunny days you can watch the light trace the meridian. After ten minutes you continue upward to the observation gallery, where the balcony offers views of the Vltava, Prague Castle, and the Old Town rooftops. Children should stay close to adults on the narrow staircase.

Library Hall

After descending from the tower, your family enters the Library Hall. The barrel-vaulted ceiling carries frescoes depicting the Temple of Wisdom and allegorical figures of the arts and sciences. Walnut bookcases line every wall, rising two storeys to the vault. The collection holds tens of thousands volumes, many in vellum bindings with gilt spines. Celestial and terrestrial globes stand on pedestals between the cases. The parquet floor is geometric marquetry in oak and walnut. Natural light enters through tall eastern windows. Flash photography is prohibited to protect the pigments and bindings. Your guide highlights key works and explains the Jesuit scholarly tradition. Children are welcome but must remain with their parents and speak quietly—the hall is an active conservation environment. You spend approximately ten minutes in the hall before the tour concludes.
