Klementinum + Charles Bridge — A 90-Minute Combo

Klementinum visitor centre to the Astronomical Tower to Charles Bridge — a tight 90-minute combination that catches both at their best moments.

Updated May 2026 · Klementinum Tickets Concierge Team

The Klementinum and Charles Bridge are 100 metres apart — the Klementinum visitor centre opens directly onto Křižovnické náměstí, the small square at the foot of the bridge's eastern tower. This proximity means you can combine the 50-minute Klementinum guided tour with a 30-minute Charles Bridge walk in a single 90-minute slot. Here's the practical route that gets the best of both.

The combined route — Klementinum first

Time your Klementinum tour for 14:30 or 15:00 (an English-language slot). Arrive at the visitor centre 10 minutes early. After the 50-minute tour you exit at 15:50, with about 90 minutes of useful daylight in summer (longer in midsummer, shorter in winter). Walk directly out onto Křižovnické náměstí — the eastern tower of Charles Bridge is immediately in front of you. Climb the Old Town Bridge Tower (separate ticket) if you want a third tower view; skip it if you already climbed the Klementinum tower 30 minutes ago.

From the bridge tower's base, step onto Charles Bridge itself. Walk the bridge at a relaxed pace — 25 to 35 minutes is enough to take in the 30 baroque saint statues, the buskers and the photo angles toward the castle on the western side. The afternoon light from the Klementinum-exit timing (16:00 onward in summer) catches Prague Castle on the western bank in warm golden light, the single most-photographed Prague angle. Exit at the Malá Strana side; from there you are 8 minutes walk to U Hrocha pub or 12 minutes to Café Lounge for dinner.

Photo windows along the route

Inside the Klementinum tour, the Astronomical Tower platform (172 steps up) gives the closest angle on Charles Bridge of any tower viewpoint — the bridge sits about 80 metres below you with the river and the castle in the background. This is the best preview-photograph of the bridge from above. Photography rules on the tower platform are looser than in the library — mobile photography is allowed.

On the bridge itself, the photo angles to know: the eastern Old Town Bridge Tower at the start (look back from the centre of the bridge); the statue of St John of Nepomuk roughly mid-bridge (the most touched plaque in Prague — visitors rub the brass relief for good luck); and the view back toward Prague Castle from the western Malá Strana Bridge Tower at the end of the walk. Sunset on Charles Bridge is the most-photographed moment of any Prague day.

If you have only 60 minutes — the short combo

If you cannot fit the full 90 minutes, the short combo is to do the Klementinum tour and skip the Bridge Tower climb. The tour (50 minutes) plus a 10-minute Charles Bridge crossing (eastern Old Town side to mid-bridge, or 5 minutes for a quick photo at the eastern tower base) fits in 60 minutes total. You miss the deeper bridge experience but you have the headline two: the Klementinum's library and tower view, plus standing on Charles Bridge with the castle in the photograph.

If you have 2 hours+, add the Old Town Bridge Tower climb (137 steps, separate ticket, 15–20 minutes including the platform) for a fourth view of Prague at a third elevation. The accumulation of three tower views in 2 hours (Klementinum Astronomical Tower → Old Town Bridge Tower → optional Old Town Hall Tower with the Astronomical Clock) gives the most-thorough panorama anyone can build in a single afternoon.

Where to eat after

Old Town side: walking out of the Klementinum, the closest non-tourist meal is at Karlova 21 (Sansho Café, light Asian) or 4 minutes south at U Modré Kachničky (Czech traditional, good price for the area). Avoid the obvious restaurants on Karlova Street itself — they are reliably overpriced and inconsistent.

Malá Strana side, after crossing the bridge: U Hrocha pub on Thunovská Street is a 70-year-old Czech pub that has barely changed since the communist era — heavy Czech beer prices, hearty mains, mostly locals. Café Lounge on Plaská Street is a lighter modern Czech bistro with good lunch deals. Both are within 10 minutes walk of the western bridge tower.

Frequently asked

How close is the Klementinum to Charles Bridge?

Very close — the Klementinum visitor centre opens directly onto Křižovnické náměstí, the small square at the foot of Charles Bridge's eastern Old Town tower. You exit the Klementinum and Charles Bridge is 30 seconds away.

Can I do both the Klementinum tour and walk Charles Bridge in one visit?

Yes — a 90-minute combination fits the 50-minute guided tour plus a 25–35 minute Charles Bridge walk. Time your Klementinum tour for 14:30 or 15:00 so you exit into the bridge's best afternoon-light window.

What's the best time of day for Charles Bridge photography?

Late afternoon, 60–90 minutes before sunset, catches the warm light on Prague Castle on the western bank — the iconic Prague photograph. Sunrise (around 06:00 in summer) is the only window with no crowds. Midday is heaviest with tour groups and harshest in light.

Is Charles Bridge free to walk?

Yes — Charles Bridge is open 24/7 and free to cross. The Old Town Bridge Tower at the eastern end (separate ticket) and the Lesser Town Bridge Tower at the western end (separate ticket) are paid attractions with stairs to viewing platforms.

Where can I eat near the Klementinum?

On the Old Town side, walk away from Karlova Street to avoid tourist pricing. Sansho Café on Karlova 21 (light Asian) and U Modré Kachničky (Czech traditional) are decent. On the Malá Strana side after the bridge: U Hrocha pub or Café Lounge on Plaská Street.

Should I climb the Old Town Bridge Tower if I've already done the Klementinum tower?

Optional. The view from the Old Town Bridge Tower is at lower elevation than the Klementinum Astronomical Tower but with a more direct angle on the bridge itself. If you have the time, the 137-step climb is rewarding for the close-up bridge angle. If you only want one elevated view, the Klementinum tower is the stronger of the two.
